Rare and original, ca1900 Cast Iron and Brass, Automatic type, Countertop / Desktop Cigar Cutter manufactured by the Brunhoff Manufacturing Company of Cincinnati, Ohio.
This very attractive, Desktop Cigar Cutter measures approx. 4 1/4” tall to the top of the automatic cutter arm and 3 1/4"in diameter at the very heavy, solid brass base. The Cutter features a typical, Brunhoff patent automatic cigar cutter arm mounted on its original solid brass bass. The surface plate of the cutter arm is marked “Pat. Appl’d For”. While the Cigar Cutter does not have a manufacturer’s mark, the Brunhoff Mfg Co received a patent in 1902 for this design automatic cigar cutter and the Cutter offered here was surly manufactured by Brunhoff.
The Automatic style Cigar Cutter works by placing the tip of the Cigar in the hole on the end of the arm that extends in front of the base and pushing the arm downward. This action causes a blade to pass over the hole and nip off the end of the cigar. A spring mechanism returns the arm to its upright position when the pressure is removed. This Cigar Cutter has two different size holes for different size cigars.
This very rare and original, Cast Iron and brass Countertop Cigar Cutter is in very good condition. There are no cracks, chips, breaks, repairs or physical damage of any kind. There is some loss to the nickel plating on the Cutter Arm and some oxidation to the exposed surface although the top plate of the Cutter Arm retains its original nickel plating. The cast iron and brass elements of the Cutter are well preserved and overall the Cigar Cutter displays nicely. The cutter mechanism is intact and in good working order - the blade is sharp and well preserved and the return spring strong.
