Sophie was one of 9 children born in Munich, Germany. A successful concert in Frankfurt in 1867 was attended by K. Tausig who subsequently gave her tuition. She received some instruction from Franz Liszt. Their relationship was not exclusively musical; from their liason a daughter, Celeste was born.
In 1872 Sophie married cellist, David Popper.
She professed at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, 1883-7. In 1894 in London gave first British performance of Tchaikovsky's Fantasie for piano and orchestra and at the same concert played her, "Zigeuner-weisen for piano and orchestra." In the same visit gave a performance with her pupil V. Sapelinikov of Liszt's Concerto Pathetique.
